begin{chapter}{Theological Styles and Methods}
In general we can consider three different approaches to theology:

\begin{description}[labelsep=0pt]
\item[Scholarly]: based on writings from the past and discussion with (intellectual) contemporaries.
\item[In the world], looking at the poor and suffering around and asking `what does our theology lead us to do or leave undone?'
\item[Worshipping], focusing on divine beauty rather than truth or justice.
\end{description}

There are different ways to describe and characterise these three styles.

Each approach brings its own fruits. However, they may fail to be fully faithful and Christian when developed one-sidedly. The scholarly approach may fail to face public issues. The second style may drift away from the authoritative voices of Scripture and tradition. The approach focused on beauty may neglect sound scholarship and social commitment. Christianity needs an inclusive approach that allows these three styles to complement and mutually enrich each other.

\subsection*{Some guidelines}

\begin{description}[labelsep=0pt]
\item[Be scriptural]; involve yourself with Scripture and the history of its reception in literature, art, behaviour, etc. Consider many different voices in this, to not incorporate someone's opinion into the general tendency of Scripture.
\item[Be historical]
\item[Be philosophical]
\item[Be provisional]
\item[Be ecumenical]
\item[Be local]
\item[Be converted]
\item[Be prayerful]
\end{description}
